THE TAKEAWAY
Increase specificity when the buyer’s requirements and evidence justify it. Early exploration, solution evaluation and a named-account business case need different content.
The decision this guide helps you make
When should ABM messages become more specific?
You will leave with: A readiness-based message map with explicit evidence requirements.
Start here: Identify the current decision.
Download this guide’s decision worksheetSpecificity is a decision about evidence
An early-stage buyer may still be defining the problem. A detailed product pitch can answer a question they have not yet chosen to ask. A buyer evaluating known alternatives may need exact constraints, integration evidence and a clear comparison.
Treat specificity as a relationship between the decision and available evidence. Personalisation should change what helps the buyer move forward. A detailed message based on a weak assumption is still weak, even if it uses the company name several times.
What the retargeting study found
Lambrecht and Tucker used an online travel field experiment to compare more specific retargeted advertising with generic information. Their 2013 Journal of Marketing Research paper found lower average effectiveness for specific ads, with usefulness changing as consumers developed clearer preferences.
The setting is travel advertising, not enterprise procurement. Our ABM application is a hypothesis to test: offer problem-level evidence while requirements remain open, then increase product and account specificity when the buyer supplies a clearer evaluation frame.

The practical workflow
- Identify the current decision
- Record readiness evidence
- Choose the appropriate depth
- Coordinate the next touchpoint
- Review progression and gaps
Compare the approaches
| Approach | Useful when | Limitation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploration | Requirements are unclear | Detailed pitches can be premature | Offer a diagnostic question |
| Evaluation | Criteria are emerging | Needs relevant proof | Provide a focused comparison |
| Decision preparation | Investment and delivery are discussed | Unknown inputs remain | Show assumptions and validation |
| Mixed buying group | Roles are at different stages | One account label can mislead | Map role-specific tasks |
Define observable readiness states
Exploration means the business problem or requirement remains uncertain. Evaluation means the buyer has identified criteria or asked for evidence. Decision preparation means the group is resolving investment, risk and implementation questions. These are working states, not labels inferred from a single page view.
Use direct conversations, requested assets and agreed evaluation tasks to update the state. A technical stakeholder may be evaluating architecture while finance remains in exploration. Keep role-level differences instead of forcing the whole account into one stage.
Build three versions for a fictional expansion
For Northbridge Components, an exploratory message asks which coordination issues are changing as the distribution network grows. An evaluation message offers a checklist for order-data handoffs and exception handling. A decision-stage message summarises agreed constraints, estimated implementation work and unresolved assumptions.
The third version requires facts from the account discussion. It should not fabricate costs to make a business case look complete. Mark unknown inputs and offer a validation step. The buyer receives more depth because the evidence and task have advanced.
Coordinate specificity across touchpoints
Lemon and Verhoef’s customer-journey synthesis connects experience across touchpoints and functions. For ABM, this suggests inspecting the transition from content to conversation: the seller should know what question the asset helped the buyer address.
Keep the argument consistent across the page, message and meeting. If the buyer requested technical evidence, a generic follow-up that restarts discovery can create friction. Conversely, a detailed landing page cannot establish that every visitor is ready for a proposal.

Test the transition, not just the headline
Record the message state, evidence used and action offered. Compare whether responses clarify requirements, request evaluation or progress an agreed decision. Use account-level comparisons where practical and preserve starting differences.
If buyers repeatedly ask basic problem questions after a detailed pitch, reconsider timing. If qualified evaluators cannot find the technical evidence they need, increase specificity. The next revision should address the observed decision gap rather than add more company-specific decoration.
Your next-action checklist
- Exploration: Offer a diagnostic question. Check the limitation: detailed pitches can be premature.
- Evaluation: Provide a focused comparison. Check the limitation: needs relevant proof.
- Decision preparation: Show assumptions and validation. Check the limitation: unknown inputs remain.
- Mixed buying group: Map role-specific tasks. Check the limitation: one account label can mislead.
Use the comparison to choose a bounded next step. Record the evidence, the responsible owner, and the review decision before extending the play to additional accounts.
How to use the evidence
Read each reference against the claim it supports. Platform documentation describes capabilities; public cases report a publisher’s experience; research findings apply to the studied task and population. The workflow in this guide is an operating proposal to evaluate in your own account context.
